From Poland to Ukraine

Citizens of Poland, other EU states and Switzerland can cross the Polish-Ukrainian border on the basis of a valid passport. Citizens of those states are exempted from the obligation to obtain visas. Citizens of other countries, except the USA and CIS countries, will most probably in 2012 need to apply for a visa.

From Ukraine to Poland

Citizens of Ukraine wishing to enter the territory of the Republic of Poland are obliged to obtain a visa in a Polish consulate. The procedure involved is quite straightforward. Polish visas are issued free of charge to Ukrainians.

Polish consular offices accept visa applications from foreigners regardless of their place of residence. An employment visa is an exception – applications for employment visas must be submitted to the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland competent with respect to the foreigner’s place of residence.

Ukrainian citizens holding visas or the right of residence in Schengen states or the Czech Republic are exempted from the obligation to hold a Polish transit visa.

Step by step – how to obtain a visa?
There are several types of Polish entry visas:

  • a short-term visa: entitles for entry and an uninterrupted stay in Poland or several consecutive stays within a 6-month period, where the time spent in Poland does not exceed 3 months,
  • a long-term visa: entitles for entry and an uninterrupted stay in Poland or several consecutive stays, where the time spent in Poland does not one year during visa’s validity period.

A foreigner entering the territory of the Republic of Poland should have: „resources to cover costs of accommodation, food, transit and exit from the territory of the Republic of Poland, in the amount of 100 PLN per each day of stay (not less than 500 PLN) for the entire journey time”; and money to cover the costs of medical treatment in the amount of 300 PLN per each day of stay. Foreigners are not obliged to have zloty – the Polish currency. They can have the required resources in foreign currencies. It is not necessary to prove a financial guarantee if a foreigner has an original invitation registered with a Voivodship Office. Money to cover the costs of accommodation, food, transit and exit from the territory of the Republic of Poland can be confirmed by a traveler’s check, a credit card or relevant certificate from a bank having the seat on the territory of the Republic of Poland. Money to cover the costs of medical treatment can be substituted by a confirmation from an insurance company declaring that it will cover the costs of medical treatment on the territory of the Republic of Poland (medical insurance).

Holding a visa does not guarantee entry into the territory of the Republic of Poland. The Border Guard makes entry decisions on case by case basis.

An application for a visa should be submitted in a Polish consulate. Visas are issued by the following Polish consular offices on the territory of Ukraine:
