EURO 2012: meeting with UEFA
Olga Terentyeva has interviewed Anatolij Tymoshchuk, the Ukrainian National football team and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder.
- How did you react when you found out that Ukraine together with Poland have jointly applied for the right to host the European Football Championship EURO 2012, and when our Bid appeared among the finalists?
- When I learnt about the joint Bid of Ukraine and neighboring Poland for the right to host the European Championship, I got a great feeling, I was very glad that our countries were able to compete for such an honorable right – to host EURO 2012. Аs a Ukrainian I will be more than happy, if we manage to win this right, and the European Championship will take place namely in our state.
- In what way in your opinion hosting of EURO 2012 can influence development and popularization of Ukrainian football?
- I think that already today football is sport # 1 in Ukraine, and hosting EURO 2012 will only stimulate its further popularization. It means a lot to me that people always come to the stadiums to support us and show that they really vote for our team, our country.
- Organization of an event of such a scale requires a lot of expenses from the state and investors. Why do you think it is worth for Ukraine to go for it?
- Hosting of an European Championship or any other sports event of that kind implies both expenses and profit, profit, much larger than any kind of expense, show that can lead our state only to victory, and not only financial; improve their international image.
- In October, social research company, appointed by UEFA, will make a social questioning in Ukraine and Poland in order to investigate the level of public support of the European Championship hosting among the population of both countries. The research results will play a significant role in the selection of the hosting association. What will you advice our citizens?
- Definitely, I want to wish all the Ukrainians, not only football fans but people far from football to passionately support this idea and do everything possible in order to contribute their small part into development of this big project. If we win the Bid for the right to host EURO 2012, it will be our common achievement, of the whole country, two countries. I want to wish everybody to support and vote for us!
