EURO 2012: meeting with UEFA
Spain won the title of European U-19 Football Champion. In the final match played in Poznań Spain defeated Scotland 2:1 (0:0).
Spaniards well deserved the champion title. They won four matches and had one draw in the match against Portugal (1:1) when they played using reserve players. They scored as many as 17 goals in five matches. This has been the third championship title won by Spain in U-19 category in four last years. In 2002 they triumphed in Oslo, and two years ago they won in Nyon.
Comments after the match:
Tommy Wilson (the coach of the Scottish team): - In comparison to the first match against Spain we changed the tactics. We knew much more about how Spaniards play. We were very close to having a draw. In the final part we had many good opportunities. But I am very proud of my players. I was much impressed by Polish spectators, who shouted "Scotland" with Polish accent. That was very nice. I had never experienced anything like that before.
Gines Melendez (the coach of the Spanish team): - First of all I want to congratulate Scotland and coach Wilson. We had to work hard for our success. In the first half we controlled the game but were unable to find a way to score a goal. In the second half we had more freedom but Scots were fighting to the very end. I also want to thank Polish fans for support throughout the entire tournament.
The best goal scorers of the tournament are Ilhan Parlak (Turkey) and Alberto Calvo (Spaind) – they scored five goals each.
