Transport priorities of Warsaw

Relieving Okęcie airport from the burden of traffic, expansion of voivodeship roads, improvement of transport connection between Warsaw and the region – those are the major tasks in the scope of transport planned by the authorities of Warsaw and Mazowsze region in connection with preparations for EURO 2012.

The authorities of Warsaw and Mazowsze region have already made a preliminary review of potential sources of financing for projects related to hosting of EURO 2012. Representatives of the local government see the financing potential for those investments both from own resources and from structural funds available to the voivodeship’s local government (the Regional Operational Program) and to the Government (in particular – the Infrastructure and Environment Program).

Key investments in transport infrastructure are discussed below.

Airports
It is necessary to relieve the burden of heavy traffic from Okęcie airport through the use of regional airports in Mazowsze region. Regional airports are assumed to support low-cost airlines, which - as a rule - are chosen by travelers.

Roads
Regional airports will require good and fast rail and road connections with the capital city. The first roads to be modernized are as follows:
 - No. 630 Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki – Jabłonna;
 - No. 580 Warsaw – Leszno – Kampinos – Żelazowa Wola – Sochaczew;
 - No. 575 Płock – Nowy Kazuń.
It is also planned to put into operation a rail line connecting the newly constructed Warsaw-Modlin Airport with the capital city and Okęcie airport.

The next priority is to improve the efficiency of transport connections of Warsaw and the metropolitan area with the region. The major investments in this regard include modernization of the following roads:
 - No. 634 Warsaw – Zielonka – Wołomin – Miąse – Tłuszcz – Wólka Kozłowska;
 - No. 719 Warsaw – Pruszków – Żyrardów – Kamion;
 - No. 721 Nadarzyn – Piaseczno – rz. Wisła – Wiązowna – Duchnów;
 - No. 724 Warsaw – Konstancin – Jeziorna – Góra Kalwaria.

Investment will also cover construction of the express ring road of Warsaw at the section „Puławska” node – „Lubelska” node. The ring road will be complemented by the express road S8/S7 „Opacz” node – „Paszków” node including the linkage to the national road No. 7 at Magdalenka node. Construction works will also commence on the express road S17 at the section „Marki” node – „Lubelska” node.

Municipal transport
It is also planned to develop a modern municipal and suburban public transport:
 - construction of the II-nd line of the underground;
 - modernization and expansion of WKD and SKM lines, tramway lines and integration of the rail transport system;
 - construction „Park&Ride” system parking lots
 - increasing the number of connections, modernization and purchase of the rolling stock.
