EURO 2012: meeting with UEFA
In the forthcoming five years Trójmiasto, particularly Gdansk, will experience a genuine transport revolution.
A new line of the Fast Urban Railway (SKM) will be created in Gdansk to connect the Rębiechowo airport with Wrzeszcz district. This is just one of the projects aimed at expansion of the Trójmiasto infrastructure which are likely to be implemented by 2012.
The Rębiechowo airport is to be expanded by 2009 so that it can accept 4 million passengers annually.
Members of local governments of Pomorze region hope they will also obtain funding from the state budget for widening of the lower and upper sector of Słowackiego Street in Gdansk (the shortest way from the airport to Wrzeszcz, and on to the Baltic Arena stadium), and also for the construction of a tunnel under Sopot. Both investments, jointly with the new SKM line, will enable smooth movement of fans from Gdynia, where accommodation and training base for the period of EURO 2012 is to be established.
During the championships fans will move around Gdansk by new tramways and buses.
Romuald Nietupski, the director of the Roads and Greenery Management in Gdansk, pointed attention to the necessity to construct a southern ring road for the city and of Sucharskiego Route. He also added that it is necessary to install a smart traffic light system.
