EURO 2012: meeting with UEFA
On 29th March the Parliamentary Committee for Physical Culture and Sport held a meeting in Warsaw devoted to selection of the host of the European Football Championships in 2012.
Representatives of the Ministry of Sport presented current data on the construction of the National Sport Centre in Warsaw. They also presented the current state of refurbishment works on the football stadiums that Poland-Ukraine submitted as facilities for EURO 2012 matches.
Refurbishment of the stadium at Bułgarska Street is under way in Poznań. Eventually the stadium’s capacity will be 46 000 spectators. The investment will be completed in 2010.
In Gdańsk, where the „Baltic Arena” sport centre is to be created, cost estimation and design works are currently under way. The entire facility, whose completion is planned for 2010, is to cost over PLN 650 million.
The Olympic Stadium in Wrocław is to be expanded to accommodate 45 000 spectators. Design works are currently under way; the estimate cost of the investment is PLN 160 million.
Refurbishment of the Wisła stadium is currently under way in Krakow. The facility is expanded so that 35 000 spectators can watch matches there. The cost of the investment is to amount to approx. PLN 212 million.
The refurbishment program for the Stadion Śląski in Chorzów covers, amongst others, roofing of the facility. The preliminary planned cost of the investment of PLN 363.7 million will be most probably exceeded since costs of construction materials are rising. After completion of all works the stadium will be able to accommodate 60 000 spectators.
The total costs of all investments related to refurbishment and construction of new facilities is to amount to over PLN 2.5 billion, including PLN 1.25 billion for the National Sport Centre in Warsaw. Polish Minister of Sport, Tomasz Lipiec, ensured that the funding is earmarked, even more so because government guarantees were given to the idea of joint hosting of the championships by Poland and Ukraine.
