EURO 2012: meeting with UEFA
On Thursday, 26th April, a decision of the Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński established the Intergovernmental Team – the Organizing Committee for the European Football Championship EURO 2012. The first meeting of the committee was held on the very same day.
The Committee, which will be chaired by the prime minister, is composed of: the minister of sport, a deputy Prime Minister, the minister of finance, the minister of economy, the minister of labour and social policy, the minister of housing, the minister of culture and national heritage, the minister of regional development, the minister of the treasury, the minister of the interior and administration, the minister for foreign affairs, the minister of justice, the minister of transport, the minister of health, the Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, the President of the Office for Competition and Consumers Protection, the President of the Polish Tourism Organization, the President of the Public Procurement Office and the Secretary of the Office of the Committee for European Integration.
Representatives of the President of the Republic of Poland, of the Speaker of the Sejm selected from among MPs, a representative of the Speaker of the Senate selected from among Senators, a representative of the Polish Football Association, the President of Polish State Television TVP S.A., the President of the Polish State Radio Polskie Radio S.A. as well as Presidents of Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdansk and Chorzów were invited to participate as members in the works of the committee.
The President of Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko, shall head the national organizing committee for EURO 2012. The relevant decree signed by the head of the state was published on the website of the administration of the President of Ukraine.
Members of the committee include: Gregory Surkis, the head of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU), Oleg Blohin, the coach of the Ukraine’s National Team, Sergij Bubka, the president of the Olympic Committee of Ukraine, Vitalij Klichko, an advisor to the President, Andrij Shevchenko, the captain of the National Team, as well as heads of local administration. Domestic investors are also among the Committee composition: Rinat Achmetov, the owner of football club „Szachtar Donieck”, Ihor Kołomyjski, vice-president of FFU, and Ihor Taruta, the head of the Industrial Union of Donbas and football club „Metalurg Donieck”.
In connection with preparations for the championships co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, Yushchenko obliged the Ukrainian government to develop an action plan for the years 2007-2012.
This plan will take into account acceleration of the construction of the stadiums in Donieck and Dnipropetrovsk (there are constructed with private money of Renat Achmetov and Ihor Kolomoyski), as well as reconstruction of the stadiums in Kiev, Lviv, Odessa and Charkiv, which are to be put into operation by 2010.
The President has also ordered the government to modernize the Ukrainian transport network, airports and to develop a plan for tourism development.
Yushchenko indicated in the decree that financing of EURO 2012 will be made from state funds and "other sources compliant with the Ukrainian legislation".
